Sochi August 2010 Progress?

The organisers of the London 2012 Olympics may feel they have their work cut out, but Dmitry Chernyshenko - boss of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics - is facing a mammoth task.
His team is having to help transform the Black Sea resort of Sochi, and its surrounding area, into a wintersports arena.
It means the construction of a new winter community in the North Caucasus mountains, the construction of 300 kilometres of roads, 100km of rail, 39 tunnels and 24 thermal and hydro power stations.
"We are well on track," asserts Mr Chernyshenko, a native of Sochi who was handed the games' baton five years ago.
"Our construction site is now probably competing in terms of size with London's," he says.
"It is a most challenging situation."

NHL Player may not participate in the 2014 Winter Hames

While Vancouver was a bonanza, the Sochi Games present bigger challenges — longer travel, the fatigue factor, and the possibility of injuries to the guys who lure ticket-buyers to NHL arenas.
The fact that the International Olympic Committee doesn’t throw even a dime back at the NHL is an impediment as well.
“I can understand,” two-time Olympic gold medallist Scott Niedermayer said this month. “The league has its investment in their players. They want them to remain healthy and on the ice playing for their teams to make money. It’s a business.
“A lot of times it doesn’t get said, but that’s the reality of it. Players are in it as a business to make money, the owners are in it for the same reason and that creates issues and concerns for everybody.”

Sochi Logo

Commenting on the Sochi 2014 logo, Fred Burt, managing director of design agencySiegel+Gale London, said:
“I’m no fan of the London 2012 identity so it’s a relief to see Sochi 2014 restore some sanity. It feels fresh and up-to-date, promising a new Russia that perhaps the wider world does not know [think how Beijing benefitted in this regard].
“I’ll be interested to see how the URL plays out—has the system been designed to drop the ‘.ru’ in certain circumstances?

All Sochi Hotels to be Rated!

In this week’s government’s decision all tourism infrastructure in Russia – that includes hotels, ski resorts, beaches, and other tourist and recreational venues – will go through mandatory classification. And it will all start with hotels in Sochi.
Hotels in Russia are not in a hurry to get classified, as the procedure can be expensive, but the benefits are not always clear. Currently, only 5% of all Russia’s hotels went through classification. Meanwhile, Sochi’s commitement to the Olympics is 57 000 hotel rooms ranging two to five stars. Mandatory classification of all hotels will help to understand what is currently missing, what needs to be built.
How soon all this will start rolling wasn’t annouced.
On unrelated (well, related to hotels) news, Hilton will open Doubletree by Hilton Sochi-Adler hotel in the year 2012.

Sochi Location for the 2014 Winter Olympics

Sochi on the map
The Winter Olympic Games of 2014 will take place in Sochi, Russia. For the first time this country will host winter Olympic games, and if the ex-Soviet Union is taken out of the calculation, this will be the first Olympic games ever in Russia. At least three big challenges face Moscow on the road toward this major international event. One of them is financial; the second has to do with the domestic politics; the last but not the least deals with regional political situation. If all these challenges are satisfied, Russia and the region won't be the same in short period of time.

2014 Winter Olympics Sochi (Venue Concept)

Russky Dom in Vancouver at the 2010 Winter Olympics

In accordance with the regulations laid down by the International Olympic Committee, the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee is obliged to present its vision for the Sochi 2014 Games in Canada, as well as showcasing the city and country which, in four years time, will be the focus of attention for millions of people in the rest of the world.
Unprecedented in its scale, the Sochi2014.ru World, Russky Dom project will be the only official location for the Russian delegation in Vancouver. It will introduce guests at the Vancouver 2010 Games to Russia in its role as a leading sports power, as well as to the city of Sochi — modern, hospitable and open to the world. Sochi World will become its own gateway to the future in 2014 — in Russia, in the Krasnodar region, in the Olympic location of Sochi itself.

Mascots for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi

... The traditional Slavic counterpart of Santa Claus who is also Father Frost of the city of Velikiy Ustyug, received an official Sochi 2014 diploma to commemorate his appointment. Following the award, Father Frost offered to become the official mascot for the Sochi 2014 Winter Games. Despite Father Frost’s generous offer, the unveiling of the official Sochi 2014 mascot (or mascots) will, in line with Olympic tradition, not take place until 2011 — three years ahead of the Games.

Mascots for the 2014 Winter Olympics

Along with 2008 Russian presidential election, on March 2, 2008 there was an unofficial referendum held in Sochi to elect the mascot for the 2014 Winter Olympics. 270,000 voters along with their ballots received a coupon with four mascot candidates: Ded Moroz, a snowflake, a polar bear and a dolphin. According to a representative of Sochi city administration, the majority of Sochians voted for the dolphin.[23] However, representatives of the Sochi Organizing Committee for the Games, which is to officially elect a logo and a mascot, commented, that while respecting the opinion of Sochians, such a procedure is usually held later, the mascot is to be elected not earlier than 2011 and the logo in the middle of 2009. They also pointed out, that the final version of the mascot should be a consensus of opinions of all citizens of the country and the result of work by professional designers and market analysts.[24] On December 1, 2009 the official 2014 Winter Olympic logo was released.[25] International Olympic Committee President, Jacques Rogge, said of the logo: "It's very appealing. It's very creative, innovative. I think it will appeal especially to the young population."[26]
